Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)
& Hair Density Tattoo

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is an extremely advanced method of cosmetic tattoo that can give permanent and extremely natural results. It's great to restore your old hairline and create the illusion of hair fullness and density.

The treatment is very gentle and can be a great alternative to a hair transplant and without the downtime from work. The results are bespoke to you and look unbelievably realistic and natural. It can also be used to mimic fullness to thinning hair and cover transplant scars.

FAQ's/ what to expect

What is Scalp Micropigmentation and who is it for?

Whether you would like to restore a hairline you once had and are conscious of going bald, or you may have lots of hair but you're finding you're thinning in places, I can help. I can also camouflage hair transplant scars or add density and fullness after a transplant. This treatment can also help both male and female hair loss to mimic hair density and add fullness or create a shaved head look to mimic real hair follicles.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) just for men?

No, lots of women are increasingly suffering from hair loss due to alopecia or menopause. Depending on the pattern of hair loss and your hair colour you may be able to have some realistic looking hair density tattoo to your thinning hair. Please message to book your consultation.

How many sessions will I need?

For this treatment I suggest you book a video consultation or message me with pictures so I can assess how many treatments you may need and advise the cost. Typically most people have 3-5 sessions. This is to build colour, depth and realism and also means the colour can be adjusted at each session, if need be meaning we never go too dark or too much in one go to ensure a lifelike and natural realistic result. Once you've booked to go ahead with the treatment, I will discuss colour, desired shape and style with you. You're welcome to bring along any images you like, however, I'll always recommend something to suit your unique bone structure, eyes and face. I will draw some options for you in terms of hairline and we can decide together before tattooing.

How Long Does It Take?

Scalp micropigmentation usually takes around 3 hours per session; this includes your consultation and pre-drawing. Hair density or hair filling tattoos can be booked per hour.

Does Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) tattoo hurt?

Most people find the treatment pretty comfortable, with only some discomfort in certain parts and most find it certainly manageable. You'll be sitting face down in a special padded chair and you're welcome to sleep, chat to me (I'm a good listener) or chill out to music or bring podcasts.

What Happens During a Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) treatment

We'll first discuss your desired outcome in detail, focusing on the shape, size, placement, and colouring of your new areola. Jo will then create a preliminary sketch drawing on your head and create a new hairline using temporary markers, looking at the shape in detail. We can tweak this sketch as many times as you like until you feel comfortable with your new hairline. Pigments will then be selected to carefully complement your skin tone and desired results. You will then sit forward in a specialist comfortable chair and relax while the tattoo session begins. You are welcome to sleep or listen to music throughout and switch off.

Why does some scalp micropigmentation look blue?

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) can sometimes turn blue due to bad technique and several factors as below. That’s why it’s so important to choose an artist who understands colour theory like Jo and has been trained at a high standard. Pigment / Ink Quality: The type, quality and colour mix of the pigment used can influence colour retention. Lower-quality pigments may fade and shift to a blue or green hue over time. Jo only uses high quality premium inks. Depth of Application: If the pigment is deposited too deep or too shallow, it may fade in an undesirable way. Proper technique is crucial for achieving the right results. Sun Exposure: Prolonged sun exposure can cause pigments to fade or change colour. Protecting your scalp with sunscreen or hats can help maintain the original colour. Aftercare: Proper aftercare is essential. Not following aftercare instructions can lead to fading and colour changes.

How do I prepare for a hair density tattoo or scalp micropigmentation (SMP) session?

Avoid alcohol the night before and stay hydrated. On the day please avoid caffeine (I know I’m sorry!) and any energy drinks or Aspirin and Ibuprofen - it makes your blood vessels come to the surface and will make the treatment hurt more and your skin sensitive. It can also lead to retaining less pigment affecting your results and your investment.

Will I be able to go to work straight after, or out that night?

Most people feel fine right after and could go out or to work the following day. You may be a little red for a day or two if you’ve had a full scalp session, but the new hairline is worth it. You need to drink plenty of water and you may drink alcohol and coffee afterwards, just not before.

What is the aftercare for hyper realism eyebrow tattoo?

You will leave loving your new eyebrows! They won’t look harsh and will look natural right away. You may find the next day they can be slightly darker in colour however this will only be by about half a shade, so only you are likely to notice. The main thing is to keep them dry and avoid water or washing on the brow area for 10 days, along with any swimming and sunbeds. You will be given a cream to apply each night. You can go to the gym a few days later but avoid excessive very sweaty workouts for a week after the treatment.

What is the aftercare for Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

You will see your new results straight away! You may be a little red on the day you leave and for around 1-2 days. A cream will be given to you to put on each night to help the tattoo heal. You may feel a little tender but typically not sore. You need to avoid the gym and excessive sweating or steams or saunas. You may feel a little more tired that day than usual. Drink plenty of water and rest. For 4 days you can’t get your head wet in the shower or shampoo. After 4 days you can shower and wash hair but only with water for the first week. After 1 week you can resume normal activity.
