3D Areola Nipple Tattoo:
What to expect & FAQ's

What is 3D Areola Tattoo and is it just for people who’ve had breast cancer?

It isn’t. Whilst ultra realistic 3D Areola Tattoo is often mostly associated with people who’ve had breast cancer, it can also be done for those post breast uplift or reduction or those who've had top surgery or gender affirming surgery. Jo’s highly commended areola restoration tattoo treatments create a natural-looking areola nipple tattoo that gives the illusion of a lifelike 3D nipple and areola even on flat post mastectomy skin. Unlike hospital tattoos they don’t disappear and fade and the results can really help patients who have faced breast cancer or mastectomy feel more like themselves again. You can also have areola tattoo enhancement that covers scarring on the areola or gives you a colour boost for pale nipples post breast reduction or uplift surgeries as well as creating neater, even nipples following Gynecomastia surgery, or through gender reassignment.

What is the difference between 3D Hyper Realism Areola Tattoo and the free ones I can get on the NHS in my hospital?

The difference between 3D hyper-realism areola tattoos and the free options available through the NHS typically lies in the level of artistry, technique, and personalisation. Artistry and Technique: 3D hyper-realism areola tattoos are crafted by highly skilled artists who specialise in creating lifelike appearances. Jo is from an art background and uses advanced techniques to create depth, shading, and detail, making the areola and nipple look incredibly realistic. Personalisation: Jo’s treatments involve a more tailored approach, taking into account your unique skin tone, shape, and personal preferences to achieve a look that feels right for you. Time and Attention: My treatments allow for more time spent (up to 3 hours appointment time) ensuring you’re not rushed and that every detail is perfect and that you feel comfortable throughout the process. Aftercare and Follow-Up: Comprehensive aftercare advice and follow-up options, ensuring you achieve the best possible results. Permanent inks - as a licensed tattoo artist Jo will use permanent inks, meaning you don’t have to keep coming back every year, you can draw a line under your journey and feel confident your results will last. While NHS options are valuable and can provide basic coverage, the 3D hyper-realism treatments offer a more specialised and artistic approach, which can significantly enhance the final appearance.

How Long Does It Take?

Areola pigmentation or colour boosting nipples post uplift/ reduction takes around 2 hours and around 3.5 hours for a complete photo realistic double areola tattoo. This includes your consultation and pre drawing.

What Happens During a Areola/ Nipple Tattoo treatment?

We'll first discuss your desired outcome in detail, focusing on the shape, size, placement, and colouring of your new areola. Jo will then create a preliminary sketch drawing on your skin of the areola and nipple complex using temporary markers, looking at shape and size and detail. Pigments will then be selected to carefully complement your skin tone and desired results. If you have feeling in the breast area you’ll then be numbed and the treatment will start. You are welcome to sleep or listen to music throughout and switch off.

Does Areola Tattoo hurt?

Most people find that discomfort is very minimal, and often doze off or just relax. I use a good numbing gel throughout your treatment and I’m trained in working on scarring, using a very gentle approach to avoid aggravating the delicate skin.

How long does 3D Areola Reconstruction last?

After your two treatments, in some cases 3, Areola Tattoo will last for up to 10-15 years without the need for top ups. The inks used are permanent inks and will barely fade at all over time.

Will I be able to go to work straight after, or out that night?

Yes. Most people may feel a little tender for a day or two after but can carry on as usual. You’ll have a clear sterile dressing on for up to 6 days and should avoid heavy sweating or submerging in the bath or swimming pools for 7 days after but usual showering is fine.

How do I prepare for Areola Reconstruction tattoo

Avoid alcohol the night before and stay hydrated. On the day please avoid caffeine (I know I’m sorry!) and any energy drinks or Aspirin and Ibuprofen - it makes your blood vessels come to the surface and will make the treatment hurt more and your skin sensitive. It can also lead to retaining less pigment affecting your results and your investment.

Why do I need two sessions?

Everyone needs two sessions, this allows me to see how colour has healed after one session and what needs to be adjusted and enhanced. All colours heal differently on different skin types and levels of scarring and some retain more than others in one session. So rather than going too dark with colour, I prefer to take a less is more approach that can be adjusted to create the most natural lifelike results. More realism and 3D details are also built up in the second session.

What is the aftercare for 3D Areola tattoos and Areola Pigmentation?

You will see your results straight away! A cream will be applied and clear sterile dressings for 3 days. You may feel a little tender but typically not sore. You need to avoid the gym and excessive sweating or steams or saunas. You may feel a little more tired that day than usual. Drink plenty of water and rest. In 3 days time you will remove the dressing and gently clean and apply more cream and another dressing for 3 days. After 6 days you can apply cream and the following day resume to normal bathing and exercise.
